A 41-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl are dead after a fatal two-vehicle collision near 150 Mile House Sunday afternoon.
A 61-year-old Surrey man, who was the lone occupant of his 2008 Ford pick-up, was heading northbound on Highway 97 when his truck crossed the centre line and struck a 1999 Ford pick-up near Amarillo Road.
Both trucks veered off the road into opposing ditches.
The Williams Lake RCMP, Search and Rescue and BC Ambulance arrived at about 12:40 p.m. and declared the woman and the girl dead at scene.
The driver of the southbound truck, a 27-year-old woman from 150 Mile House who is the girl's stepmother, was stabilized at Cariboo Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops for injuries to her upper leg, says Const. Rick Meaver of the Williams Lake RCMP detachment.
Meaver says a five-year-old boy, who is the injured woman's stepson, was also in the southbound truck and was not injured in the collision.
The deceased woman, Meaver says, was a friend of the family.
The man, who was the lone occupant of the northbound truck, was taken to Cariboo Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the RCMP say.
The injured woman is Kristine Hargrove, the deceased child is Mackenzie Forgues-Brock, and the uninjured boy is Austin Forgues, says Dianne Hargrove, Kristine's mother and the children's grandmother.
The Tribune is unable to release the name of the deceased woman, as the next of kin still needs to be notified.
Kristine was at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops Monday, receiving treatment for leg injuries, and possibly for injuries to her pelvis, Dianne says.
She says trying to explain to Austin what has happened has been difficult, as he doesn't know where his stepmom is.
"He's asking a lot of questions," she says. "That's really tough."
Police are still investigating why the man drove over the centre line.
Alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor.
"Everything is speculation at this point," Meaver says.
